ARE YOU MAKING THESE 3 COMMON MISTAKES FOR YOUR OILY SKIN?

THE LIES

You’ve probably been told that if you have acne-prone or oily skin that you should avoid oily skincare products at all costs. Most people mistakenly believe that putting oily products on oily skin will cause more blockages, more acne, and make their problems even worse. But, that is not always the case.

THE SCIENCE-Y STUFF

Oily skin occurs when the sebaceous glands in the skin produce too much sebum. Sebum is the waxy, oily substance that protects and hydrates the skin. Many people don’t know that their skin will actually overproduce sebum when it's dry or irritated, making their skin even more oily!

MISTAKE #1

Using scrubs and treatments containing acids that actually strip the face of its natural oils.

When you use these products, the body responds by overproducing sebum! What you should be doing is replenishing your acne prone skin with a good moisturizing product that contains high quality fatty acids which keeps oil levels balanced and clears breakouts.

MISTAKE #2

Shying away from all products that have the word ‘oil’ in their list of ingredients. What you should be doing is using facial oils. Facial oils help stabilize and regulate the overproduction of sebum, and can actually clear your acne!

MISTAKE #3

Using comedogenic oils. It's important to remember that not all oils are created equally. Comedogenic oils will clog your pores. You are probably more familiar with the term non-comedogenic which means it won’t clog your pores. For example, the fatty acid profile of coconut oil contains molecules that won’t penetrate the deepest layers of the skin; therefore, it can easily cause buildup and breakouts.

Conversely, DR.AV products are formulated using exclusively non-comedogenic botanical extracts. Our proprietary formulas penetrate deep into the skin leaving it supple, moisturized and rejuvenated. In addition to balancing oil levels, DR.AVs serums have natural antibacterial properties and bacteria is one of the many causes of acne.

5 STEPS TO RECLAIM YOUR BEAUTIFUL SKIN

So instead of steering clear from all facial oils and oil-based moisturizers, there is a better approach to skincare if you suffer from acne-prone or oily skin.

Step 1: Wash Your Face (Really! Everyday!)

Wash with gentle, fragrance-free cleansers. Avoid cleansers that irritate or dry your skin. Remember that the “squeaky clean feel” is actually doing more harm than good.

Step 2: Use a Toner

Toning helps to rebalance the skins pH levels. Look for natural toners with witch hazel that has skin soothing properties and acts as natural astringent and anti-inflammatory agent .

Step 3: Softly Pat Your Face Dry

After washing and toning, make sure to pat your face dry with a soft towel. Avoid tugging on the skin, or rubbing your skin harshly with the towel. This will irritate the skin and can spread bacteria (both cause oil and acne).

Step 4: Use a Face Mask

Certain face masks, like clay masks, absorb the skin’s excess oil without irritating it. Use a face mask occasionally and make sure to apply a moisturizer afterward.

Step 5: Apply Moisturizer

This is the crucial step to replenish the skin, maintain oil levels, and prevent an overproduction of sebum!
